Mastodon is a decentralized, open-source social network based on the ActivityPub protocol. It consists of thousands of independent servers (instances) that communicate with each other and together form the Fediverse. Mastodon offers chronological timelines without algorithms, no advertising, and strong moderation tools. Users can run their own instance or join an existing one.
